A brief timeline...

In the past, Kathakaars, which means storytellers, would recite or sing tales taken from the Indian epics of mythology in temples, streets and gatherings which eventually developed into an early version of the Kathak dance form (InSync, n.d.). In the Medieval age, during the Bhakti movement, the people danced to stories of Radha-Krishna. Other Hindu Gods were also added into Kathak dance (InSync, n.d.). During the Mughal era, Kathak was performed in the Mughal Kings’ courts (InSync, n.d.). The Persian incorporated intricate footwork, spectacular spins and exquisite expressions, which are the important characteristics of the dance form today (InSync, n.d.). In the British Raj era, many Schools of Kathak were formed, each having their own style (InSync, n.d.). In the Modern era, Kathak dancers has worked hard to make Kathak an international art that continues to shine through the art of storytelling (InSync, n.d.).
